Cost of Trump’s Military Parade Rising Fast

Trump said it was possible the parade could be staged next year if the cost "comes way down" and added that with the savings "we can buy some more jet fighters!"

The Republican president's finger-pointing set off a social media spat with D.C.'s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Throughout the day, multiple USA officials had confirmed the $92 million estimate that was put together by the interagency parade planning group.

The Department of Defense pegged the cost of the parade at roughly $12 million back in July, but CNBC reported Thursday that Pentagon officials have increased their estimate to $92 million.

In a statement, a Pentagon spokesman on Thursday provided no reason for the postponement, which came amid a spate of news reports that the event, which is expected to include aircraft, vehicles, period uniforms, and symbols of U.S. power.

Other city officials say they were given too little time to plan for the needs of the parade, and had only been approached by the OMB on Tuesday to talk about the costs of the parade.

He held out hope of holding the parade next year instead, and said this year he would travel to Paris for events marking the centennial of the end of fighting in World War I, which falls on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

President Trump liked France's military parade so much, that he ordered one of his own.

That cost wasn't just for closing D.C. streets either, but for transporting assets, paying troops, and setting up security.

There was no indication of how long the parade would last - including whether it would span multiple days - or confirmation of the November 10 date, the official said. It also was expected to involve a number of military aircraft flyovers, which can carry significant costs in personnel, aircraft and support.

Colonel Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Thursday that the U.S. military and the White House had "agreed to explore opportunities in 2019", an announcement that came several hours after reports about the projected parade price tag.
