Egypt finalising details of long-term Hamas-Israel truce

GPOPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi in New York

Two Palestinians have been shot dead by Israeli troops during protests along the Gaza border today.

The forces fired live bullets and rubber-coated steel rounds at the protesters who gathered at many encampments along the border, killing Karim Abul-Fatayer, 30, and injuring 156 other protesters, WAFA reported.

The crossing is a vital lifeline for Gazans and their crippled economy, but Israel had closed it to goods except for food and medicine to pressure Hamas.

Israel's domestic security chief warned cabinet that keeping Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of talks about a long-term truce with Hamas would "prove terrorism pays off", according to a TV report aired Thursday.

Israel and Egypt have imposed an economically crippling blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized control of the coastal territory from the internationally backed Palestinian Authority in 2007. Power is on for just a few hours a day, unemployment has sky-rocketed and poverty is widening. "Our people's sacrifice in the protests will be translated into national achievements soon", he said.

It occurred just a week after the USA moved its embassy to Jerusalem, and violence along the Gaza border peaked when 62 Palestinians were killed in riot. An Israeli soldier was killed by a Gaza sniper during this same period.

Israel says it has no choice but to enforce its blockade to defend itself against Hamas, a group that has called for its destruction. But the high casualty rate among mainly unarmed protesters has drawn worldwide criticism.

Both Al Mayadeen and Al-Hayat‎ said the issue of ‎a potential prisoner-exchange deal would be ‎discussed only after the ceasefire proves viable, ‎giving no time frame.‎.

Most of the casualties occurred on May 14, when Israeli forces attacked Palestinian protesters marking the 70th anniversary of Israel's occupation of historical Palestine and the ensuing ethnic cleansing of half a million Palestinian refugees.

Police later released footage from a surveillance camera that shows a man walking along then suddenly pulling out a knife and lunging at the officers.

Since 2015, Palestinians have killed over 50 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British tourist in stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks.

PCHR emphasizes that continuously inflicting casualties, either killed or wounded, is unjustified and targeting and killing civilians, who exercise their right to peaceful assembly or while carrying out their humanitarian duty, using lethal force is a serious violation of the rules of intentional law and global humanitarian law.
