Elon Musk Breaks Down During Interview

The security gate outside the Tesla Motors Gigafactory construction site east of Reno Nev

The newspaper said Musk alternated between laughter and tears during the interview in which he said he was working up to 120 hours a week and sometimes takes Ambien to get to sleep.

Normally known for his brash and unorthodox leadership style, Musk was, at points, penitent and self-reflective, acknowledging the headaches some of his more recent public behavior have caused for his company, its board members, and its shareholders.

Shares of Tesla slumped more than 7 percent in early trading Friday.

The report cited sources saying Tesla is trying to find an executive to help relieve some of the pressure on Musk.

Yet he told the newspaper that he has no plans to give up his dual role as Tesla's chairman and CEO.

The interview puts board members in a hard position because Musk, who entered Tesla as a major investor and built the company into a force that has changed the perception of electric cars, is the company's public identity. But Gordon said it has to act now or be open to shareholder lawsuits.

"Am considering taking Tesla private at US$420".

Musk himself said there was "no active search" and said he was not planning to resign his positions. Instead, he or she would form a team to work overnight and solve problems.

With Tesla CEO Elon Musk under SEC investigation for his Twitter habit, the company hounded by short-sellers, questions about its production capability lingering, and an ongoing case with a whistleblower who said the company knowingly shipped cars with punctured battery cells, it's hard to keep abreast of all the different Tesla scandals these days. But he told the newspaper that he wrote the tweet inside a Tesla Model S while he was driving to the airport, and that no one else reviewed it.

Musk talked about his grueling work schedule, the struggle to crank out his company's first mass-market electric vehicle - the Tesla Model 3 - and the fallout over his public declarations about taking Tesla private.

Hansen alleges Tesla failed to disclose that it received written notice from the US Drug Enforcement Administration about a Tesla employee possibly engaged in selling cocaine and crystal methamphetamine from the Nevada factory on behalf of a Mexican drug cartel, according to Meissner who did not release the whistleblower filing he said his client made to the SEC.

Musk, 47, has a reputation for being an eccentric visionary.

They have since fallen back but remain elevated.

The subpoena signals regulators are investigating if Musk was telling the truth in his tweet about have financing locked up for a deal that analysts have estimated would require $25 billion to $50 billion.

However, the following day investigators in the San Francisco office of the Securities and Exchange Commission asked Tesla for explanations.

The company said the board formed a special committee to evaluate proposals to take the company private.

Nearly a week later, the CEO said the basis for that statement were conversations with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which first expressed interest in helping take the company private in early 2017.

Tesla said it took the allegations that Hansen brought to the electric auto maker seriously and investigated.

In an hour-long sit-down with the newspaper, Musk also detailed his frequent use of the sleep-aid Ambien - a drug he's discussed using before, and whose well-known side effects include sleepwalking.

The company could face sanctions if regulators find it misled investors about production delays.
