Elton John Posts Heartfelt Tribute to Aretha Franklin

In 1970

Within minutes after news of her death, musicians, actors, producers, high-profile executives, political figures and others paid tribute to the powerful singer.

"Critics always talked about the gospel feeling in Aretha's voice so it was a very big deal when she finally made a proper gospel album like "Amazing Grace, '" Carpenter said. We just want to send love and prayers".

By the end of the 1960s she had gained the title "Queen of Soul". She may be best remembered for her vocal virtuosity and her chart-topping hits like "Respect" and "Chain of Fools", but she gave some extremely memorable performances at sporting events. Her performance was phenomenal, and so were her earrings.

Franklin's career spans six decades.

Franklin cancelled planned concerts earlier this year after she was ordered by her doctor to stay off the road and rest up. In 1960, she signed with her first major record label.

The long-reigning "Queen of Soul" who sang with matchless style on such classics as Think and her signature song, Respect, died at her home in Detroit.

The performer, who became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was diagnosed with the illness in 2010. She received the Grammy Legend Award in 1991 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994.

One of her most recent Grammy wins was in 2007 for "Never Gonna Break My Faith" with Mary J. Blige.

"America has no royalty", former president and first lady Barack and Michelle Obama said in a statement shortly after the sad news broke. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then president George W. Bush in 2005. Her passing is not only a tremendous personal loss for me, but for people all over the world who were touched by her incredible gift and remarkable spirit.

Last year, Aretha gave her last performance at a gala in NY held in aid of the Elton John Aids Foundation.

Correction: This story has been corrected to clearly identify that Aretha Franklin performed at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s memorial service.
