Ex-ISIS fighter arrested in Sacramento entered U.S. as refugee

A federal agent removes items from an apartment following the arrest of Omar Ameen Wednesday Aug. 15 2018 in Sacramento Calif

Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and Dick Durbin (Ill.) because "refugees are the most carefully vetted of all travelers" who "do not arrive in the US without first clearing extensive biometric, biographic, intelligence, medical, and law enforcement checks, involving multiple agencies".

Then living in Turkey, Ameen was given approval to come to the US on June 5, 2014.

The Department of Homeland Security has issued warnings in the past about ISIS fighters posing as refugees in order to infiltrate Europe and the United States.

Ameen appeared before a federal judge on Wednesday and is awaiting extradition to Iraq, where he will stand trial.

Hopefully, it will be clear to everyone else that until our vetting system is vastly improved, the number of refugees should by no means be increased.

A 2017 study from New America Economy found that increased refugee resettlement in the USA does not correlate to higher crime.

Most people spend at least three years being interviewed, undergoing biometric checks and medical exams, and filling out paperwork before being approved for refugee status.

With the Trump administration facing an October 1 deadline to determine how many refugees will be allowed to enter the USA a group of partisan senators fired off a letter lambasting the "slashing of refugee admissions" and requesting a reversal of President Trump's crackdown.

The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force has been investigating Ameen for filing fraudulent travel or immigration documents since 2016, according to a court filing. It says the Federal Bureau of Investigation independently corroborated Ameen's involvement with the terrorist organisations and participation in the slaying. U.S. Magistrate Judge Edmund Brennan ordered him detained until his next court appearance set for Monday, accepting prosecutors' argument that Ameen is unsafe and a flight risk.

But US authorities now say that Iraq has identified Ameen as a member of two designated jihadist terror groups, Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and the Islamic State group.

He and at least five other named suspects opened fire and the man shot back.

Ameen was identified by a witness to the slaying who viewed a series of photographs of ISIS members, according to the Iraqi documents.

Ameen fired his weapon at the officer while the victim was on the ground, hitting him in the chest, according to court records.

Militants later claimed responsibility for the slaying on social media.

"Ameen has reportedly undertaken numerous acts of violence on behalf of these terrorist organizations, ranging from planting improvised explosive devices to the murder that is the subject of this extradition", the court documents read, according to KCRA.

The FBI quotes one witness as saying Ameen's vehicle in 2005 was a Kia Sportage flying a black al Qaida flag with a cut-out roof and a machine gun mounted on the rear.
