Facebook launching augmented reality games on Messenger

Facebook

Facebook has copied another one of Snapchat's features, and this time it brings augmented reality games to Messenger video chats.

Over 17 billion video chats were sent on Facebook Messenger last year, twice as many as the year before, claims the social media platform.

The person or group you are video chatting with will get a notification indicating it is time to get your game on.

"We hope this new experience - made possible by AR Studio - will help you create fun memories with the people you care about most, even when you can't be together".

Dubbed "Don't Smile" and "Asteroids Attack", both are determined to make speaking with those closest to you more engaging then ever.

Users can now challenge their friends with two games: "Don't Smile", where players see who can hold the longest face, and "Asteroid Attack", where they navigate their spaceships without hitting asteroids.

Games have always been a part of Facebook.

Facebook appears determined to radically change how video calls work - the company is planning the release of two additional games "in the coming weeks and months".

The games will be launching in the latest version of Messenger and once you're updated it's easy to load them.

Then you just need to find the person or group chat that you want to speak with and then start a video chat by selecting the video icon.

For now, it's going to be ads and in-app purchase free, but as Facebook is well aware of the fact that this is an earning source for many hence, the feature is expected to be added soon. Snappables allows the user to use touch, motion, and facial expressions to compete for high scores or in literal head-to-head multiplayer match-ups.

The introduction of games into Messenger is another strategy by Facebook to increase user engagement on the platform.

A Facebook spokeswoman said the company could see some financial information from such users if they choose to opt-in, but did not use it for "advertising or anything else".
