Federal Bureau of Investigation says ex-Trump campaign chairman hid over 30 offshore accounts

Federal Bureau of Investigation says ex-Trump campaign chairman hid over 30 offshore accounts

Mr Manafort and Mr Gates were the first people indicted in Mr Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

During his three days of testimony, Gates laid out in detail how payments to Manafort's company from political work in Ukraine were made to bank accounts in Cyprus and the money was never reported to accountants or the Internal Revenue Service.

She identified Manafort as the person in control of the 31 foreign bank accounts.

Lawyers for Mr Manafort, Donald Trump's former campaign manager, hammered Rick Gates about his own crimes.

The exchange between Gates and Manafort's team could be a key moment in the first case that Mueller's team has taken to trial as part of its broad investigation into Russian election meddling.

In a dramatic moment before the jury, Manafort's defence counsel, Kevin Downing, put it to the government's star witness: "There's another life, right, the other Rick Gates?".

Prosecutors called Morgan Magionos, an Federal Bureau of Investigation forensic accountant, as the next witness to testify.

Numerous emails admitted into evidence Wednesday showed how Manafort personally directed wire transfers from such accounts.

"They failed to check the box that Mr. Manafort had a foreign bank account", Welch said, later adding. "I made a mistake". Gates and Manafort were not targets of the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the time of the interview. He finished his testimony Wednesday, Day 7 of the trial.

He told the jury that Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, loaned himself money between two Cypriot accounts because "he was trying to decrease his taxable income".

"The jury can't be happy with this judge because of the snide, snarky comments", Napolitano said.

Judge T.S. Ellis III asks the jurors before court begins each day whether they were able to follow his instructions and not discuss the case with anyone.

"I do somehow think he has gotten his back up personally about Greg Andres". Gates did not have a chance to respond to those allegations Monday.

At times, Ellis has crossed lines, Litman said.

After Mr Gates described his theft as "unauthorised transactions" instead of embezzlement, Mr Downing prodded him to use the latter term - and Mr Gates ultimately relented, saying: "It was embezzlement from Mr Manafort".

There have been exceptions, like when Gates said that he might have also embezzled from the Trump inauguration committee by inflating his expenses, and when he testified about how Manafort reached out to talk about securing a banker who loaned him money tickets to the inauguration and potentially a position in the administration. Downing said, according to NBC News.

After saying Monday that he committed crimes with Manafort, including concealing offshore accounts to avoid reporting them to the US government at tax time and claiming false income to get loans, Manafort defense attorney Kevin Downing asked the witness, "This jury is just supposed to believe you after all the lies that you've told and the fraud you've committed?" Gates was initially charged with Manafort but pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in February.

Gates, who had been on stand for more than seven hours by conclusion of Tuesday's testimony, is anticipated to be on stand for an additional hour more of cross-examination, according to Manafort's attorneys.

In testimony Tuesday, Gates acknowledged embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort and carrying on an extramarital affair. He said there were 15 secret accounts. And he lied to special counsel investigators after striking a plea agreement with them.
