Former cricket legend Imran Khan confirmed as new Pakistan Prime Minister

Indian cricket star Sidhu arrives in Pakistan for Imran's expected oath-taking with 'message of love'

Cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan on Friday defeated Shahbaz Sharif in a one-sided contest to become Pakistan's next prime minister after the grand opposition alliance fell apart over the PML-N chief's nomination for the top post.

Mr. Khan, 65, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured 176 votes while his only rival and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Sharif got 96 votes.

He said he was saddened today by the demise of former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who he recalled had started the friendship bus service between the two countries.

Imran Khan, whose party swept the General Elections 2018 has won the trust of majority of lawmakers in the Lower House of Parliament. "I have come here to take part in the happiness of my friend (Imran)", he said, adding sportsmen and artistes help bring the people of two sides closer.

After the announcement of the election result, lawmakers from the PML-N chanted slogans and protested against the decision.

The election was branded "Pakistan's dirtiest", after widespread claims through the campaign that the powerful military was trying to fix the playing field against the PML-N and in Khan's favour.

"I will not leave those who looted this country for years, who spent all our taxpayers' money overseas and didn't let this country progress, there will be no reconciliation with the looters, accountability will be our top priority", Imran Khan said during his first speech as PM-elect in National Assembly. Talking about the qualities of Khan, the former cricketer said: "I have seen Khan converting his weaknesses into his strength".

He will face myriad challenges including militant extremism, water shortages, and a booming population negating growth in the developing country, among others.

He will also have to contend with the same issue as many of his predecessors: how to maintain a balance of power in civil-military relations.

Known in Pakistan as "Taliban Khan" for his calls to hold talks with insurgents, he increasingly catered to religious hardliners during the campaign, spurring fears his leadership could embolden extremists.
