HBO Orders Watchmen Adaptation From Damon Lindelof

Damon Lindelof's Watchmen Receives Series Order at HBO

So 2019 is looking like a strong year for the network: The return of Game of Thrones for its final season, the return of True Detective for its long-awaited third season, the return of Veep after its extended hiatus, and now the debut of Watchmen.

It's finally official: Watchmen will be HBO's first-ever superhero series.

The series is based on the DC graphic novel from Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. In a five-page letter to fans back in May, Lindelof (no stranger to fan controversy thanks to shows like Lost) expressed his love for the series, and promised that he will not simply be adapting Watchmen for television.

Like the original graphic novel, this will be set in an alternate timeline where superheroes are basically vigilantes - more often than not, everymen with silly costume gimmicks that border on the ridiculous. Remaining in that same world, the HBO series will now take place in the present day with new characters. Per HBO, the new series "embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own".

Lindelof executive produces with Kassell and Tom Spezialy. Its cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Adelynn Spoon and Lily Rose Smith. Stephen Williams directs and executive produces.

Long considered "unfilmable", Watchmen was nevertheless adapted by director Zack Snyder as a 2009 feature that, while largely faithful to the source material, proved polarizing with critics and audiences alike.

"Some of the characters will be unknown", Lindelof previously said of the upcoming series, per Variety.
