How to see the Perseid meteor shower peak this weekend

At best, a typical Perseid meteor shower produces 80 to a few hundred meteors per hour.

Skygazers can witness up to a whopping 60 and 70 meteors every hours.

This year the meteor shower will peak on the night of August 12, going into August 13. It orbits the sun every 133 years and was last seen in 1992 - so it won't be back again until 2126. "The moon will be near new moon, it will be a crescent, which means it will set before the Perseid show gets underway after midnight", NASA's Bill Cooke told Space.com. Best of all, constellations and the Milky Way should be highly visible due to a New Moon on August 11, meaning there will not be as much light to drown out the stars.

Even better news still, the moon won't be spoiling the view.

"Remember, you don't have to look directly at the constellation to see them".

In 2018, the peak night of this shower will be totally free of moonlight.

On the odd occasion you should still be able to spot individual meteors before midnight local time but they will appear much rarer.

The Perseid meteor shower usually dominates the sky in mid-August.

The higher the Perseids' radiant during the peak, the more meteors you will see. Meteors can appear anywhere in the sky so try and find an open area, away from street lights.

Sky & Telescope senior editor J Kelly Beatty advised: "Relax, be patient and let your eyes adapt to the darkness".

Travelling at a speedy 37 miles a second, they come from the direction of the constellation Perseus.

Just be aware of any local light pollution from lamps and buildings that might make the skies brighter during the peak.

If you head out, do not forget to pack something warm for the night, snacks, drinks, blankets and give your eyes up to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark of night.
