Huawei caught using a DSLR trying to sell the Nova 3's camera

Huawei caught using a DSLR trying to sell the Nova 3's camera

A commercial for a new smartphone has been accused of misleading its audience after revealing images of the ad's production were exposed on social media. In the video, the actress is beside her fellow actor who, all the scene, takes a selfie shot with the Nova 3's front-facing camera.

Huawei might make decent smartphones, but its marketing and advertising campaigns have, multiple times, been struck by controversy.

But instead of the male actor taking a selfie on the Nova 3, he is actually being photographed on a professional DSLR camera.

Huawei has been caught using a DSLR camera in an advertisement for the Nova 3 that was run by the Huawei Mobile Egypt division. The spot where the couple takes a photo at home shows us how the AI kicks in and airbrushes the recognized face of the female model even if she hasn't put her makeup yet. The issue was highlighted in a Reddit thread titled, "Huwaei faked an ad for its new phone Huawei Nova 3i' posted by user u/AbdullahSab3". And looks like Huawei knew that too well when it shot the Egypt ad. Elshamy inadvertently revealed as much on her Instagram account where she posted a series of behind-the-scenes images from the ad campaign.

This isn't the first time a smartphone maker has felt compelled to shoot outside the box.

But as you can see from the image below, it's quite clear that the supposed "fun selfie" that was captured using the Nova 3 was in fact a carefully created shot captured on a DSLR, complete with a professional photographer behind it.

When consumers discovered the Google+ image EXIF data, Huawei released a statement claiming it didn't really mean to imply that the photo was taken with the P9 and that the photo was simply shared "to inspire our community".

A tiny, fine-print disclosure about lenses and retouches appears on the Apple ads; that's not the case with Huawei's ad-and the Huawei photo was clearly not taken on a Huawei phone at all.
