India vs England: Hosts Name Unchanged Squad For Third Test Against India

Nasser Hussain

England all-rounder Ben Stokes has been ruled out of the third Test against India, owing to the ongoing trial for affray at a Bristol court.

Stokes told Bristol Crown Court he had been acting in self-defence and was defending two gay men when the incident occurred on September 25 a year ago.

But the jury returned a verdict of not guilty against the England cricketer and also cleared Ali of the same charge. Stokes, who was with fellow England global Alex Hales, then got into a fight with Ali and Hale.

The 27-year-old is facing a trial for his involvement in a Bristol nightclub brawl, which took place last year in September.

Mr Hale was acquitted of the same charge last week.

His lawyer, Gordon Cole QC, told the jury it was up to the prosecution to prove Stokes had not acted in self-defence, but there were gaps in the evidence that should cause the jury to be "massively concerned".

It has not gone unnoticed by the European Central Bank that both men were out late at night - the incident occurred after 2.30am - with two games left to play in the series and that Stokes was alleged to have been "really very drunk" by the prosecution.

He said he had not been drunk but admitted he could not remember what had been said.

Ali, who sustained a fractured eye socket - the court was told he continued to have problems with his vision - denied there had been homophobic abuse.

The doorman said Stokes had become aggressive and insulted him before the altercation occurred.
