Ireland rise in latest Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings

France are the new leading team after their World Cup triumph with Belgium close behind after vaulting the previously second-placed Brazil, who fall to third.

The defending World Cup champions entered the competition No. 1 in the rankings, but they failed to reach the knockout rounds and made their earliest exit from the tournament in 80 years.

France's Hugo Lloris lifts the trophy as they celebrate winning the World Cup, Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, Russia - July 15, 2018.

England are now ranked sixth in the world after the World Cup semi-final appearance.

The Croatian side who knocked England out in the semi-finals are one of the most significant movers as they rise from 20th to fourth, their joint-highest ranking of all time.

Finalists Croatia have moved into the top 10, climbing from 16 to 4 while Gareth Southgate's Three Lions have moved up 6 places to 6.

Other big movers include Uruguay (5th, up 9), England (6th, up 6), Sweden (13th, up 11), and World Cup hosts Russian Federation (49th, up 21).

Tunisia dropped three places to 24 in the world after winning just one of their three group matches in Russian Federation.

Federation Internationale de Football Association said the new system would no longer weight matches according to which region they were played in and this would provide "fair and equal opportunities for all teams across all confederations".

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new formula, approved by the FIFA Council in June after a lengthy period of testing, relies on adding or subtracting points won or lost for a game to or from the previous point totals rather than averaging game points over a given time period as in the previous versions of the Ranking.
