John Elway: Colin Kaepernick Had His Chance To Join Broncos In 2016

Bears to face 2017's Mr. Irrelevant in preseason game vs. Broncos

Broncos president John Elway said Thursday he isn't pursuing Colin Kaepernick to be his team's backup quarterback, because Kaepernick has already turned down an offer from him.

Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly, nephew of Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, has been promoted to the second string signal caller on the depth chart. With that in mind, Elway was asked about the possibility of signing Kaepernick. And I said in my deposition, and I don't know legally if I'm able to say this, but he had his chance to be here.

The trade rumors actually started in April 2016, months before training camp, and months before Kaepernick would start his protests during the Anthem. "He didn't take it", Elway told reporters. "We offered him a contract, he didn't take it".

Both the 49ers and Kaepernick declined the deal. Instead, Kaepernick was cut and hasn't been in the league since, and the Broncos are still trying to figure out their quarterback situation, at least in terms of who will be the backup with the addition of Case Keenum as the unquestioned starter. He began kneeling during the song in order to protest police brutality and the hotly contested move - and other protest variations - were later adopted by other players.

Kaepernick and former 49ers teammate Eric Reid, who also kneeled during the anthem and is without a job in the National Football League, have filed collusion grievances against the NFL.

Back in May, Elway gave a deposition for the lawyers of Kaepernick in his collusion case against the NFL.
