Kenya joins Canada, Germany and Hong Kong in Rugby World Cup repechage

Namibia face Kenya with a World Cup spot up for grabs

Congratulations and I have no doubt that they will make us proud at the RWC 2019 in Japan. Canada, Germany and Hong Kong will also contest the repechare.

After getting the better of Botswana and Zambia on Tuesday, the Gems needed to post a positive result against a stubborn Namibia to leave their World Cup qualification hopes in their own hands.

Namibia take on Kenya in the final game of the qualifiers, and Davies told Xinhua that the mood in the Namibian camp is excellent.

Namibia were overwhelming favourites to win given their prowess on attack and the ability of their forwards to get front-foot ball all through the competition in which they averaged 70 points per game. There's no shame in losing to Namibia, most of whose players ply their trade in rugby powerhouse South Africa.

The truth is that the Simbas might fail to qualify for Japan.

Hosts extended the lead to 32-7 at some point, prompting Ambaka to cross over for his second try off a grabber by Simbas fly Isaac Adimo to cut the score to 14-32.

Centre Darryl de la Harpe and lock Mahepisa Tjeriko also scored tries for Namibia, while Kenya conceded a penalty try.

But Kenya fought their way back when Sevens star Willy Ambaka, who scored two tries on his Test debut against Tunisia, touched down at the corner and Darwin Mukidza converted to give the visitors a 7-3 lead.

Chrysander Botha scored two tries for Namibia, which will play in Pool B at the 2019 World Cup in Japan alongside defending champion New Zealand, South Africa and Italy as well as the victor of the repechage event.

Speaking to the media after the match Namibia's Coach Phil Davies said he was pleased with the ambitions of his side. Kenya have played Germany once, losing 30-29 in Nairobi previous year while they have met Hong Kong five times, losing on three occasions, with one win and a draw.

"The Tunisian game provided a bit of everything which the players will learn from. We have depth now", he commented.

Zimbabwe's Sables, who were expected to do very well in these qualifiers but stumbled now and again, have to fight to avoid relegation and need to avoid defeat in Kampala against Uganda to ensure they survive the chop.

Kenya's Gold Cup campaign got off to a slow start with a nervy 28-24 win away to Morocco but, since then, they have racked up the points against Zimbabwe (45-36), Uganda (38-22) and Tunisia (67-0) to set up Saturday's decider. Morocco will trade places with either Algeria/Zambia.
