On Monday morning, former Connecticut Sun point guard Lindsay Whalen announced her plans to retire at the end of the season.
She has been balancing a new job as coach of the Minnesota Gophers, her alma mater, with playing point guard for the Lynx.
Sunday is the final day of the WNBA regular season and when the Lynx will honor Whalen's career. In a statement she thanked the Lynx and her prior team, the Connecticut Sun, adding, "I look forward to the next chapter in my basketball career and wish my Lynx coaches and teammates all of the best in the future".
The 36-year-old Whalen is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who led the Gophers to their only Final Four in 2004.
By 2011, the Lynx had won their first of four WNBA titles.
WNBA President Lisa Borders says Whalen would be remembered "as one of the greatest players and winners" in the history of the league.
Whalen led the Gophers to their only Final Four in program history in 2004, where the team lost to the University of CT.
Her retirement isn't coming as a huge surprise.
Whalen racked up 322 victories during her WNBA career with 54 of them in the postseason.
She is about to reset her wins odometer back to zero as she begins her latest endeavor as head coach of the Gophers this fall.
She ranks third on the WNBA's all-time assists list, trailing only Sue Bird and Ticha Penicheiro.
In 29 games this season for the Lynx, Whalen is averaging 5.5 points and 3 assists per game.
The Lynx scheduled a news conference with Whalen and coach Cheryl Reeve for Monday afternoon at the team's practice facility.
Despite the influx of talent, the Lynx struggled in Whalen's first season, finishing 13-21 and out of the playoffs.
