Magnitude 5.9 natural disaster hits Lombok, no tsunami alert issued

Net1 Indonesia delivers Quick Response to Lombok Earthquake

A magnitude 6.2 aftershock rocked Indonesia's Lombok on Thursday, sparking fresh panic on the tropical tourist island as the official death toll from a powerful quake four days earlier nearly doubled to 259.

Almost 1500 people have been hospitalised with serious injuries from Sunday's quake and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

Indonesia's geological agency said the latest big tremor had a magnitude of 6-point-2 and occured at a depth of 12 kilometers.

Survivors of the quake have also been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks, including a shallow 5.9-magnitude quake Thursday which caused people to flee evacuation shelters crying and screaming.

Aid began reaching isolated areas of the Indonesian island struggling after a powerful quake that killed more than 130 people as rescuers intensified efforts Wednesday to find those buried in the rubble.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said people ran onto roads in panic and buildings were damaged, causing more "trauma" for people on the island.

Reuters has reported collapsed buildings and widespread damage, likely compounding fresh damage from quakes which have already devastated the island this month.

Many frightened villagers are staying under tents or tarpaulins dotted along roads or in parched rice fields, and makeshift medical facilities have been set up to treat the injured.

While exchanging messages on Facebook about the natural disaster, many Indonesian speakers used the word "selamat", which has several meanings including "safe", "unhurt" or "congratulations" depending on the context.

He said they were also looking for people with untreated injuries. "Some paramedics have to be at the shelters, some need to be mobile", Majdi said. Some buildings were damaged further because of this quake'.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross said Tuesday all of the 2,000 tourists on the Gili Islands had now been evacuated. "I do hope the government can help", she said.

He says, "People are always saying they need water and tarps".

Meanwhile, the evacuation of tourists from the Gili Islands - three tiny, coral-fringed tropical islands off the northwest coast of Lombok - has finished, officials said.
