Manned space mission by 2022: PM Modi during Independence Day speech

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has developed and tested several critical technology components for a manned space mission for over a decade, but this is the first indication of the government's approval for a manned space flight. Before undertaking the launch, we will have two unmanned missions. This human space flight venture, he said, would take the country's science and technology field to a very high level, inspire the younger generation, and "every Indian can be proud of it". Talking to media about PM Modi's promise, a scientist with the Pratham Satellite team, Tushar Jadhav said that they need to enhance the technology in order to achieve the promise.

The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) navigation satellite IRNSS-1I, on board the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C41), lifts off at the Satish Dawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in the state of Andhra Pradesh on April 12, 2018.

"India will send into space - a man or a woman - by 2022, before that if possible", Modi said in a marathon address at the Red Fort in New Delhi for the country´s Independence Day.

The mission is estimated at Rs. 9000 crore. "Our idea is to develop everything within India", he added. If successful, India would be the fourth nation to achieve the feat after the US, Russia and China. In 1984, India's first astronaut Wing Commander (retd.) Rakesh Sharma orbited Earth as part of a Soviet mission. India-born Kalpana Chawla and Indian-origin Sunita Williams are among the known names to have gone to space.

Chawla was one of the seven crew members who perished in the space shuttle Columbia's disaster during its re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere.

However of late, it has launched missions like Chandrayaan-1 (moon mission) and Mangalyaan that had aroused tremendous interest among people. It's the same launch station that was used for the GSLV MK III's June 2017 mission, as well as for the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle's mission to deliver a record-breaking 104 satellites into orbit last February. The country's second lunar probe Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled to be launched by January 2019 and will attempt a soft landing of a rover near the moon's south pole.
