Mendocino Complex Aug. 13: Ranch Fire continues to grow towards Pillsbury

Cal Fire reports a firefighter assigned to the Mendocino Complex fires has died. He said crews were able to hold it back from the majority of the summer homes in that area, and they are working to control the fire "back around the the southern fork" of Lake Pillsbury.

Late Monday, officials announced that a firefighter had died while combating the Mendocino Complex fires; no further details were made available.

The Mendocino Complex Unified Incident Commanders will be making a press statement...

The wildfire is the biggest recorded in California and is located about 100 miles north of San Francisco.

A mechanic helping to fight the Carr Fire near Redding in northern California was killed in a vehicle crash on Thursday, the eighth person to die in that conflagration.

Cal Fire has announced the Ranch Fire as the largest in California history at over 287,000 acres.

The mapping flight Sunday night did not show any major fire activity on the rest of the fire, or on any of the perimeter of the other fire in the Complex, the River Fire west of Clear Lake.

He said dry thunderstorms, which produce lightning but little rain, are expected for parts of the Rocky Mountain region, while the U.S. north-west has critical fire weather conditions that include strong winds and low relative humidity. As of Monday evening, it was 68 percent contained.

The Mendocino Complex is actually two blazes burning so close together that authorities are attacking them as one, a common practice at Cal Fire.

Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, has been charged with arson, accused of starting the fire in Orange County's Holy Jim Canyon on August 6.

His bail has been set at $1 million dollars.

After a month of burning, the Ferguson Fire has singed 96,457 acres across three national forests and private land.

Yosemite National Park will reopen Tuesday, 14 days after a wildfire choked the park with smoke at the peak of tourist season.

"We may be nearly close to containment but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done", Efird said.
