Mueller inquiry: White House lawyer McGahn co-operating with probe

White House Counsel Donald Mc Gahn has reportedly been cooperating extensively with Robert Mueller's inquiry

According to The New York Times, Mr. McGahn in at least three voluntary interviews with investigators that totalled 30 hours over the past nine months, described Mr. Trump's furore toward the Russian Federation investigation and the ways in which the President urged Mr. McGahn to respond to it.

Trump's accusation that the probe could have an impact on the fall elections comes as his lawyers and Mueller's team continue a lengthy back-and-forth over whether Trump will sit down for an interview with the special counsel's team.

Trump's original legal team had encouraged McGahn and other White House officials to co-operate with special counsel Robert Mueller, and McGahn spent hours in interviews.

As White House counsel, McGahn has had extraordinary access to the president and some of his most controversial moves.

Giuliani said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday morning that he had not debriefed McGahn, but nevertheless the legal team had "a good sense" of what McGahn told Mueller's team through Dowd.

He also said The New York Times leaked the report to get Trump angry with McGahn so he would be willing to testify in the probe.

"Most transparent in history", Trump continued in the tweet.

Although Dean was part of the White House-led efforts under President Richard Nixon to cover up the Watergate scandal, his decision to testify to Congress about it was crucial to exposing the affair and causing Nixon to resign from office 44 years ago.

Trump also attacked the Mueller investigation itself, saying that "Mueller and his gang. make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby!"

Any suggestion that McGahn has turned on him is false, Trump insisted on Sunday. McGahn provided the facts but nothing he saw or heard amounts to obstruction of justice by Trump, the person told Reuters.

Now, according to the NY Times, Trump's attorneys have become anxious about what all White House attorney McGahn told the special prosecutor's attorneys.

These alleged efforts to cover his tracks are focused on what the media is reporting; news stories about Trump's potential meddling in the Russian Federation probe or events surrounding his campaign and Russian Federation that he didn't want to get out there.

That report said that if charges are not prepared by the end of August, prosecutors in NY will likely bring them after the midterms, following justice department policy regarding politically sensitive cases.

"I allowed White House Counsel Don McGahn, and all other requested members of the White House Staff, to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel", Trump tweeted Saturday after the Times published its story. "So he and Mr. Burck devised their own strategy to do as much as possible to cooperate with Mr. Mueller to demonstrate that Mr. McGahn did nothing wrong".

"I can't imagine that McGahn would still be White House counsel if he had produced any damaging information", said Mark Corallo, a former spokesman for the president's legal team. Also, Nixon knew I was meeting with prosecutors, b/c I told him. Trump has repeatedly denounced the investigation into whether his campaign colluded with Moscow as a "witch hunt".

"I'll use his words rather than mine", Giuliani told NBC, "that McGahn was a strong witness for the president".
