Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal win in Toronto

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal win in Toronto

"I was really not focusing on winning or losing, just on starting to play good tennis and start building the right habits".

A confident Tsitsipas sent a blistering forehand to the back corner while the ninth-seeded Serbian was heading the other way on his first match point, looking at his box in disbelief.

This time a year ago, Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas had yet to record a victory on the ATP World Tour.

Next up for Djokovic in the round of 16 is Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas, who upset Austrian seventh seed Dominic Thiem 6-3 7-6 (6).

Djokovic, a four-time Rogers Cup champion, faded late on a warm, breezy afternoon at Aviva Centre on the York University campus.

Tsitsipas set up match point with a scorching cross-court victor before completing the victory in 2 hours, 17 minutes.

"This was the best match of my career", Tsitsipas said. "I knew I was playing pretty good today".

"I'm happy to see Stan playing well again".

The match was played under threatening grey skies which eventually dumped heavy rain on the courts just after Djokovic wrapped up his win. "It's true that with my serve in the second set I had some troubles but my return was working well.it was more about the mistakes from the baseline in my opinion". "It wasn't that great of a match".

Tsitsipas will next face second seed Alexander Zverev, who breezed past Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-2.

Bulgarian fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov required nearly two and a half hours to subdue Frances Tiafoe of the United States 7-6 (7/1), 3-6, 7-6 (7/4).

Djokovic said he was having no problems with the shot clock despite being a player who regularly picks up violations for the length of time he takes between points.

Also, Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation beat 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (3), and Ilya Ivashka of Belarus topped American Ryan Harrison 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Sixth seed Marin Cilic continued his quiet progress, beating Argentine 11th seed Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 6-2. Khachanov beat eighth-seeded John Isner of the United States 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), and Haase topped Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 6-2.
