NSW bushfires: very high fire danger as damaging winds forecast

Australia fires Two large blazes are being battles in New South Wales

At Ulladulla, where residents evacuated when the Mount Kingiman blaze proved risky earlier in the week, light breezes today are expected to give way to 50km/h winds tomorrow.

Two other fires south of Sydney continue to burn out of control: the blaze on Croobyar Road in Mount Kingiman, near Ulladulla; and a fire at West Cambewarra Road in North Nowra.

'All this is about is low humidity, dry fuel and strong winds.

Residents near the fire were seen covering their faces in a bid to escape the smoke that were rising above their homes.

While these preventative measures will help in the fight, the NSW Rural Fire Service admits the 28 out-of-control fires will not be contained by the weekend.

The whole of the state was declared in drought last week and the dry conditions and strong winds fanned the blazes yesterday.

"We do get fires in August, but the big difference is 100 per cent of the state is in drought and these winds are making the fires so hard to suppress", he said. "It's three months since the end of the last fire season and now we're back into it again".

"Hopefully this isn't going to be a sign of things to come".

Nearby resident Barry Matthews said "absolutely howling" winds woke him about 6am.

"It had been burning for a few days, but we weren't concerned at all", he said.

The blaze at Mount Kingiman, near Ulladulla, had burned through more than 1100 hectares.

He watched the fire as he ate his breakfast before he was evacuated about 9am. The RFS said while the blaze is burning close to properties, crews are on scene to protect them.

A bushfire burns in Milton near Ulladulla on Wednesday.

Authorities in the state issued emergency warnings for several bushfires.

The Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting damaging winds for the state's south-east on Thursday, including for a possible blizzard above 1900m.

Four firefighters have been injured while battling a blaze on NSW's mid north coast after their tanker rolled over.

That contingent is helping to co-ordinate responses to huge blazes that continue to burn in California and other U.S. states.

More than 500 firefighters are struggling to contain dozens of unseasonable blazes burning from Victoria to Queensland, with conditions set to worsen in the coming days.

"Although there's no threat to properties, we do have fire crews working with local residents and landowners to deal with the fires as they approach", NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Chris Garlick told AAP.

'Fires can start anywhere at any time so it is important for all of us to be prepared, ' he said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The current situation down south is a reminder to all residents across the state that could be affected by bush fires to take the time to discuss with your family what you will all do and where you will go in the event of a bush or grass fire", he said.
