Pedestrians hurt as car hits barriers at U.K. Parliament, man arrested

Video showed smoke coming from the bonnet of the vehicle

Armed police immediately surrounded the silver auto after it crashed at 7.37am (06:37 GMT), pointing guns at the driver as he was removed from the vehicle, according to footage posted on Twitter. A number of pedestrians have been injured.

Police have cordoned off Millbank and Victoria Tower Gardens.

At least five police patrol cars attended the scene within minutes while armed officers were seen dragging the driver from the vehicle.

The driver was detained at the scene by armed police, wearing a white shirt and a black hooded jacket.

The area is now in lockdown. Officers remain at the scene. "We will issue further info when we have it", London's police force said in a statement on Twitter.

It was the first of five attacks on Britain past year which police blamed on terrorism.

"The police were saying get out, get out of the way".

Witnesses said officers initially stood back and said it seemed as if they were concerned that the vehicle may have contained a bomb.

Another eyewitness Ewalina Ochab descrbed the moment she saw the incident unfold.

Eyewitness Ewalina Ochab said: "I think it looked intentional - the vehicle drove at speed and towards the barriers".

"I was walking on the other side [of the road]. I turned around and I saw a silver vehicle driving very fast close to the railings, maybe even on the pavement".

It comes after Parliament in Westminster was hit by a terror attack in March 2017.

The measures were extended in the wake of the Westminster Bridge attack in March 2017 when Khalid Masood ploughed a auto into crowds on Westminster Bridge, killing four people.
