Pentagon puts off military parade until 2019

Anadolu Agency Anadolu

On Thursday night, the Pentagon announced that military parade President Trump ordered has been postponed from days after the midterms elections to some indefinite point in 2019.

The parade to honor US military veterans and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One could cost more than $90 million, the USA official said, citing provisional planning figures that were almost three times an earlier White House estimate.

"We originally targeted November 10, 2018 for this event but have now agreed to explore opportunities in 2019". The event would focus "on the contributions of our Veterans throughout the history of the U.S. Military, starting from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 to today, with an emphasis on the price of freedom" - not just awesome military gear. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss early planning estimates that have not yet been finalised or released publicly.

In September, Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and recalled how much he enjoyed watching the parade.

"We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money", Trump said in June after meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. That estimate pegged the cost of the parade at closer to $12 million, raising new questions about the overall cost of the event.

The parade had been planned for the Veterans Day weekend, and was expected to include a large show of air power. "We will announce more information when it is available". It also was expected to involve a number of military aircraft flyovers. Big, heavy tanks could tear up streets in the District of Columbia.

The memo from Mattis' office provided initial planning guidance to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In February, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told Congress the parade would cost between $10 million and $30 million. Prior to 1991, the last parade in D.C. was in 1946 to mark the end of World War II the previous year.

The ceremony is said to be largely inspired by Trump's front-row seat at France's Bastille Day military parade in Paris a year ago.

The American Legion, a veterans organization, said earlier Thursday that while it appreciated that Trump wanted to show support for US troops, other priorities should win out.
