Rick Court out as Terps' strength and conditioning coach

President Wallace Loh speaks at a news conference held on Aug. 14 2018 to address the schools football program and the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair in College Park Md

"I have looked into the eyes of grieving mother and father, and there is simply nothing good enough", he said.

The university last week suspended four members of its athletic staff pending a review of the football team's coaching practices. "Other safeguarding actions were not taken".

Durkin, the teams third-year head coach, was placed on administrative leave Saturday.

The football program has been under heavy scrutiny since it was reported Friday by ESPN that there was a "culture of fear" marked by "intimidation, humiliation and verbal abuse" within the football program.

The final report is expected to be released to the public in September.

DJ Durkin, the head football coach, was placed on administrative leave August 11, after ESPN reported "allegations of abuse and disparagement in the program" that included "belittling, humiliation and embarrassment of players" and "extreme verbal abuse" and a player who said "he was forced to overeat or eat to the point of vomiting".

"I made this commitment this morning to the parents, along with athletic director Damon Evans, we both made this commitment, that no Maryland student-athlete will ever be in the situation where his or her life and safety will be at risk, especially when that risk is foreseeable", Loh stated.

"I am committed to doing the right thing and I know nothing that we can do will bring closure to their enormous loss", Loh said. "You entrusted Jordan to our care, and he is never returning home again, '" Loh added.

"The university accepts legal and moral responsibility for the mistakes that our training staff made on that fateful workout day of May 29, which of course led subsequently to his death", Loh said.

'Walters found that the emergency response plan was not appropriately followed, ' Evans said, adding that McNair's symptoms 'were not properly identified or treated'. What can we do to pay tribute to Jordan's life?

Evans said he has not witnessed any of the behavior described in media reports, but "make no mistake we will not tolerate any behavior from any employee within Maryland athletics that is detrimental to physical or mental well-being". Numerous most serious allegations center on Court, with former players alleging he often relied on humiliation and fear in his interactions with the team. McNair's body temperature, according to medical reports, was 106 when he was admitted to the hospital.

The attorney for the McNair family said a preliminary death certificate indicates the cause of death was heatstroke.

The school is still conducting a review of its athletic training protocols, but has already concluded from "preliminary observations" that the situation was mishandled.
