Smashing Pumpkins Were Considered For The 'Shrek' Soundtrack

Following a statement from Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan that suggested he was asked to contribute music to the film before Smash Mouth, San Jose's "All Star" singers have weighed in.

Say what you will about Smash Mouth, but Shrek wouldn't be the same without their smash mall ska cover of The Monkee's "I'm A Believer", that brings the movie to a joyous, lighthearted close. Here's hoping this whole thing ends positively, with a Smashing Pumpkins/Smash Mouth collaboration for Shrek 5.

Once the topic of Shrek came up, Exclaim notes that Corgan shared a fun fact about the Shrek soundtrack: Smashing Pumpkins were apparently offered the end credit song.

Another fan followed up, asking what song they would have chosen if Shrek didn't withdraw, and they had accepted.

In a follow-up question, he said that, if they had appeared on the Shrek soundtrack, the song that had planned to use would have been "Untitled", which was the last song the band released before they broke up temporarily in 2000.

Smash Mouth took time to respond to Exclaim! wrier Josiah Hughes, who asked for the band's thoughts on Corgan's claim.

It's worth noting that Corgan's retelling is now being disputed by Smash Mouth, who said on Twitter that they'd actually been pursued by Dreamworks for over a month before finally agreeing to take part in the film.
