Swiss Re reveals ties to Genoa bridge collapse tragedy

‘Let’s make things clear’: EU bites back at Salvini’s claim that it’s responsible for Genoa tragedy

Italy's President Sergio Mattarella demanded guarantees Saturday that all the nation's roads are safe following the Genoa highway bridge collapse, after he hugged and comforted mourners at a state funeral in the grieving port city. A number of them halted to kiss the coffins as they passed.

The tragedy has shaken the whole country.

Six days later, The Italian Civil Protection have concluded their search operation for those missing after the last three bodies were found during the night, raising the official death toll to 43.

A few hours earlier, the bodies of an Italian couple and their 9-year-old daughter were found in their smashed auto under a big block of concrete, the Italian news agency ANSA said.

Coffins containing bodies of victims of the Genoa bridge collapse are seen at the Genoa Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre in Genoa, Italy August 17, 2018.

Mr Conte confirmed on Friday that legal proceedings were under way to strip Autostrade of its contracts.

CEO Castellucci said that to his knowledge, Morandi bridge was in "good health" before the tragedy, and the company hopes to rebuild it.

Conte added that in the future the government would force companies that were granted concession for Italy's infrastructure to invest more profits in maintenance and safety.

The government has also allocated €32 million.

The government was set to hold an emergency meeting in Genoa on the disaster later Saturday.

Espresso reporter Fabrizio Gatti told SKY TG24 that a reduction of 20 per cent strength would not be significant in a modern bridge, but on a structure with the known defects of the Morandi Bridge it should have merited swifter, more decisive action.

He said workers were also making the site secure and helping investigations to establish the cause of the disaster.

Families of 19 of the dead had their loved ones' coffins brought to the hall for the funeral Mass led by Genoa's archbishop, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.

The dead also include children and three Chileans and four French nationals.

On Tuesday a 200-metre section of the Morandi bridge in Genoa gave way in busy lunchtime traffic, sending cars plummeting 45 metres into a dry river bed and near several apartment buildings. "This shouldn't have happened", Genoa resident Claudio Castellaro, 73, told AFP.

Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio has vowed to revoke Autostrade's motorway licence, even if experts have warned that this would make the company eligible for hefty compensation from the state.

During the state funeral, applause rang out and many fought back tears as a prelate read out the first names of some 30 victims who have so far been identified.

"It is the state that has provoked this; let them not show their faces, the parade of politicians is shameful", the press quoted the mother of one Italian victim as saying. "We won't stop. Our work continues in order to have the full certainty that nobody has been left under the rubble", he said.
