Ten millionth Mustang rolls off Ford assembly line

Ford Mustang 4-cylinder 2018 UK first drive review front cornering

54 years after entering production for the first time, Ford has managed to achieve something impressive - 10 million Mustangs.

Ford's 10 millionth Mustang rolled off the line at its Flat Rock assembly plant near Detroit, Michigan today, a major milestone for the best-selling sports vehicle of the last half-century. There's good reason for the specifications, too.

As for the 10 millionth auto itself, the 2019 model year Mustang is a Wimbledon White GT convertible, mirroring the spec of VIN 001 - the "first serialized 1964.5 Ford Mustang".

Sixty Mustangs helped create the figure. The first serialized Mustang off the line also carried a V8, but its transmission had half the forward speeds and just 164 horsepower.

More than 60 Ford Mustang owners of all model years assembled to spell out the milestone number with their cars, which was then followed by a flyover in a P-51 Mustang vintage fighter plane. In just a couple of years you'll be able to buy a hybrid Mustang that will be built at Flat Rock alongside an autonomous commercial vehicle and an all-electric SUV inspired by the Mustang, so anything is possible in the future.

The latest Ford Mustang offers an extensive array of technology and performance, the pinnacles of modern engineering showcased with Ford's 2019 Mustang Bullitt.

One thing's for sure, even though Ford is getting rid of all of its other auto models in favor of utilities and trucks, it has no plans to put its pony out to pasture. Luckily, after market backlash, the Mustang instead gained a second wind - leading us to the celebrated legacy we enjoy today.

But don't go looking for the 10 millionth in showrooms.
