The Death Toll From Italy's Genoa Bridge Collapse Has Risen to 26

Davide Capello a soccer player was on the motorway bridge in Genoa in Italy when it collapsed

They cited previous accidents: a bridge that fell in April 2017 in the northern province of Cuneo, crushing a carabinieri police auto after the officers and driver had barely managed to get away in time; and an overpass that in the northern city of Lecco that collapsed under exceptional weight, crushing a vehicle and killing the driver. Photos from the Italian news agency ANSA showed a massive gap between two sections of the bridge.

Luigi D'Angelo, an official for the civil protection agency, said there were 30 cars and between five to 10 trucks on the road when the middle section came down.

It was unclear what had caused the collapse, but the event raised questions among some Italian government officials about maintenance of their country's infrastructure - a common concern in developed countries, where numerous major roadways were built decades ago.

Rescue workers continue a desperate search for survivors after the collapse of a highway bridge in Genoa, Italy.

"We are following minute by minute the situation for the bridge collapse in Genoa", Salvini said on Twitter.

More than two dozen people were killed and several others injured when an aging bridge in Genoa, Italy plummeted to the ground Tuesday, dragging down several vehicles driving across it, officials said.

"It is a bit like working on an quake", said firefighters spokesman Luca Cari.

However, according to the BBC, engineers say it is too early to determine the cause of the collapse but that lightning is unlikely to be the reason. The highway bridge was erected in the 1960s, the company, Autostrade per l'Italia, said.

Video captured the sound of a man screaming: "Oh god, oh, god".

While that remained the official death toll, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said from Genoa that the number would rise. The bridge spans a three-quarter-mile section of the coastal city and carries highway traffic between Italy and France.

The disaster, on a major interchange connecting Genoa and other northern cities with beaches in eastern Liguria into France, focused attention on Italy's aging infrastructure, particularly its concrete bridges and viaducts built in the postwar boom of the 1950s and 1960s.

Borrelli told a news conference in Rome that all the victims appeared to all have been in vehicles that fell from the bridge.

That bridge "has also experienced problems during its life, so it could be that the design implies a need for a greater degree of maintenance than normal", Mr Firth said. It seemed like a scene from a film, it was the apocalypse. However, the bidding process for a substantial safety project for the bridge, worth $22.7 million, was set to begin soon, he said.

"In the sad history of bridge collapses, maintenance has sometimes been a factor, if it is poorly planned or implemented", Mr Firth said.

"There has not been sufficient maintenance and checks, and safety work for many bridges and viaducts and bridges in Italy constructed - nearly all - during the 1960s", he said.

On Aug. 6, a tanker truck carrying a highly flammable gas exploded after rear-ending a stopped truck and getting hit from behind near the northern city of Bologna.
