Unemployment in Scotland drops as European Union workers leave UK

Britain's economy warmed up a little in the second quarter from its winter slowdown of early 2018, official data showed last week, but there was no sign of an end to its lacklustre performance in the run-up to next March's Brexit. Economists had expected the rate to remain at 4.2% level.

The BoE raised interest rates on August 2 for only the second time since the financial crisis.

Economists polled in the run up to the release had expected an unemployment rate of 4.2%.

The unemployment rate was down 4% from 4.2% the month before, data from the Office for National Statistics showed.

Compared with the same three months of 2017 - when Scottish employment was at a record high - the number seeking work was up by 7,000, and the number of those aged 16 to 64 in employment was down by 3,000.

There were 2.64 million Scots with a job bertween April and June, a rise of 12,000 over the previous period.

He added: "The growth in employment is still being driven by United Kingdom nationals, with a noticeable drop over the past year in the number of workers from the so-called "A8" eastern European countries in particular".

Total annual wage growth slowed to a nine-month low of 2.4 percent, below forecasts for it to hold at 2.5 percent.

There were 2.28 million European Union nationals working in this country in the quarter to June, 86,000 fewer than a year earlier, the largest annual decrease since records began in 1997.

The number of workers on zero-hours contracts fell by 104,000 over the past year to 780,000, the first substantial fall since the ONS started tracking the figures in 2000.

"The growth in employment is still being driven by United Kingdom nationals, with a noticeable drop over the past year in the number of workers from the so-called A8 eastern European countries in particular".

It continues a trend seen since the 2016 Brexit vote. That was party offset by a 54,000 increase in Romanians and Bulgarians.
