United States to impose new sanctions on Russian Federation for poisoning ex-spy

An official judgement on the Skripal affair has tonight been passed by the the US State Department, paving the way for new sanctions against Russian Federation.

WASHINGTON-The U.S. announced new sanctions against Russia on Wednesday over the nerve agent attack against a former Russian spy and his daughter in the U.K.in March, saying Moscow violated an global ban on chemical and biological weapons.

"Following a 15-day Congressional notification period, these sanctions will take effect upon publication of a notice in the Federal Register, expected on or around August 22, 2018".

The U.S., Britain, France, and Germany issued a statement earlier this year condemning the March 4 attack as a "breach of worldwide law" and a threat to global security.

A blazing diplomatic row ensued between London and Moscow in the following weeks and months after the Scotland Yard-led investigation attributed blame to Russian Federation.

A couple from Salisbury, Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess, came into contact with the same deadly batch of nerve agent nearly three months later on June 30.

The United States has said that it is imposing new sanctions on Russian Federation, as it accused the government in Moscow of using a "lethal" nerve agent in an attempted assassination in Britain.

Russia's embassy in London said they had not received any extradition requests over allegations any of its citizens were involved in the novichok poisonings.

Ms Sturgess died, having sprayed the substance over herself, but Mr Rowley survived.
