Usain Bolt confirms A-League stint with the Mariners

Bolt is a huge football fan, and has been seen taking part in numerous charity games, including at Soccer Aid at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium back in June, when he scored in the penalty shootout and picked up the man of the match award.

The Jamaican great has negotiated an "indefinite training period" with Central Coast Mariners in Australia's A-League.

Bolt, 31, retired from athletics a year ago following a career that featured the 100m world record and eight Olympic gold medals.

"I am very excited about coming to Australia and would like to thank the owner and management of the Central Coast Mariners for giving me this opportunity", Bolt said.

Bolt said it had been his "dream" to play football and acknowledged it would require a lot of hard work and training.

Bolt, who turns 32 later this month, is not guaranteed a deal with the Mariners but has "committed to an indefinite training period with the club".

Bolt, 31, has already trained with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, South African club Mamelodi Sundowns and Norway's Stromsgodset.

'I'm looking forward to the opportunities to prove that with hard work anything is possible so I'm looking forward to it and I'm going to come here and do my best.

"I hope I can make a positive contribution to the club and look forward to meeting the other players, staff and fans in the coming weeks", said Bolt who called it a day from athletics past year.

A fortnight or so ago, it was rumoured that Bolt would be joining the Mariners on a six-week trial while they sussed out whether a "season-long affair" was viable.

The club's CEO Shaun Mielekamp said having Bolt visit would align with the Mariners' philosophy of being an innovative, entertaining and community-minded sports brand.

The Mariners begin their A-League campaign in October.

"We welcome Usain with open arms, and we will always remain grounded and focussed on the job at hand".
