Westminster car crash: Man arrested on suspicion of terror offences

Houses of Parliament crash

"At this stage, we are treating this as a terrorist incident", Scotland Yard said after the attack, adding that none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

The Met Police said: "At 7.37am Tuesday August 14, a vehicle was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of terrorist offences and taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody, police said.

Shocking CCTV footage shows the vehicle drive down the wrong side of the road before appearing to swerve into pedestrians and cyclists and slamming into a security barrier. He was wearing a black puffer jacket and led away in handcuffs. Police officers surrounded a silver vehicle which had hit several cyclists and arrested a man wearing a puffa jacket.

Armed officers swarmed the scene and sealed off a large area around parliament that is usually bustling with tourists and government workers. "We will issue further info when we have it", London's police force said in a statement on Twitter.

Scotland Yard's counter-terror team, which is leading the investigation, is treating the the rush-hour auto crash as a "terrorist incident".

He said: "Westminster has the most armed police officers of anywhere in the country and you would expect a quick response but the officers seem to have dealt with it very well".

Two people were taken to local hospitals, but authorities said the injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening.

Streets around Parliament Square, Millbank and Victoria Tower Gardens were cordoned off as police, ambulances and firefighters arrived at the scene.

A vehicle slammed into early morning commuters before striking into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament in London, where two people have been hurt.

"I was walking on the other side [of the road]".

Barry Williams, a BBC member of staff, said: "I heard lots of screams and turned round".

Two vehicles, which appear to be police vans with their lights flashing, can be seen behind the auto shortly before the crash in the video of the incident aired by the BBC.

"I saw a vehicle going at high speed towards Parliament".

"I was told to move and started to run", he said.

"I wasn't sure whether he meant to hit the cyclists, they might have just been in the way, but once he did, he accelerated towards the barrier".

The area around the crash was closed off, as was a subway station close to the parliament grounds.

The cordon has been extended past the Cenotaph on Whitehall - a five-minute walk from the scene at Old Palace Yard.

In June previous year, a group of three ISIS-inspired men rammed a vehicle into pedestrians in London Bridge area before going on a stabbing frenzy, killing eight people before being shot by armed officers. He was shot dead at the scene.

It was the first of five attacks on Britain past year which police blamed on terrorism.
