Windows 10 Could Be Coming to Chromebooks

Campfire

It would let users run Windows 10 on Chromebooks, and there are even multiple variants under development for the various Chromebook devices on the market.

It was recently revealed that Google was working on a project called Campfire for their Pixelbook which would enable users to dual-book into Windows 10 without having to jump through special hoops. However, you won't be able to run Windows 10 on all Chromebooks - largely because many Chromebooks don't ship with anything like enough on board storage to take Microsoft's OS. If Campfire is ready, it's rumored to launch on the Pixelbook soon.

Google developers have been dropping possible hints on the feature's arrival through a website devoted to tracking Chrome OS's code changes.

Other interesting nuggets here include the assertion that the system will be user-friendly and commendably seamless, not requiring enabling Developer Mode, or demanding users update their firmware manually (Google will push updates automatically).

Google's Chrome OS has become a viable alternative to Windows and macOS since its debut several years ago, but there are still times when a more powerful operating system is necessary. Of course, most of the entry-level Chromebook devices wouldn't support Campfire as it will need more than 16GB of storage. In general, Chromebooks have been priced at $300 or $400, with limited hardware. A few other Chromebook models feature 64GB or 128 GB of storage, or have an SD card slot for expanded memory. However, the company is expected to announce new Chromebook hardware in the fall during its unveiling of a new Pixel 3 smartphone.
