Zimbabwe opposition mounts legal challenge against election result

Zimbabwean police officials look at detained civilians as they stand in an armored vehicle outside MDC party headquarters in Harare

The constitution requires a losing presidential candidate to file a challenge within seven days of a victor being declared.

Zimbabwe's opposition coalition has filed a legal challenge to results of the country's recent election, in a move that delays the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as president of Zimbabwe.

The MDC must prove that any irregularities were grave enough to change the outcome of the vote.

BMI Research, a Fitch think-tank, has warned of prolonged social unrest and slow pace of economic reforms owing to the disputed outcome of polls held last month in which President Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared victor.

The MDC Alliance's legal representatives‚ Chris Mhike and Sylvester Hashiti‚ and his chief election agent‚ Jameson Timba‚ arrived at the court about 30 minutes before the courts closed for the end of the day at 4pm to file the papers.

"Our legal team successfully filed our court papers".

Also on Friday, lawyers for senior opposition figure Tendai Biti asked judges to throw out charges against him over the protests against alleged election fraud, in a case raising further global concern about the new government.

Mr Mnangagwa won 50.8% of the vote compared with Mr Chamisa's 44.3%. We have a good case and cause!

Mnangagwa, who took over after a military intervention in November 2017, had vowed the first elections after the conclusion of Mugabe's 37-year rule would be free and fair.

The European Union, Australia and Canada also said they were "deeply disturbed by continuing reports that opposition supporters are being targeted by members of the Zimbabwean security forces".

Zimbabwe Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance official Tendai Biti was released on $5,000 bail by a court in Harare on Thursday evening.

The results of the presidential election were announced on Friday last week by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

Prosecutors accuse him of fuelling illegal protests by rejecting Mr Mnangagwa's victory in the fiercely contested elections.
