5 striking takeaways from Brett Kavanaugh's Fox News interview

Donald Trump has also, however, also spoken out in increasingly defensive and combative terms in favor of Kavanaugh in recent days as the process descended into a ugly, partisan battle.

A day after Kavanaugh proclaimed his innocence and President Trump bashed a second accuser, Debbie Ramirez, Senate leaders were setting a course for a quick vote.

But his nomination process has been clouded by charges of sexual abuse that allegedly took place decades ago and an image that has emerged of a heavy drinking youth. That would be a great idea if Kavanaugh had the votes.

The new allegation, reported Sunday by The New Yorker magazine, prompted the Senate Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, to call for a postponement of Thursday's highly-anticipated hearing where Kavanaugh and Ford are to testify. "I'm confident about the trousers coming up, and I'm confident about Brett being there", she said.

Cornyn said that Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh will be questioned separately by a female Judiciary Committee staff attorney, and that Republican members will be free to question her as well. And she says: 'Well it might not be him.' And there were gaps. Calls for such an investigation were originally made by Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats when Ford's allegations came to light, and were rejected by committee chairman Chuck Grassley, the White House, and the FBI's own overseers in the Justice Department.

Kavanaugh has vigorously denied the allegation against him and on Monday night took the extremely unusual step of appearing in a TV interview while the Senate considers his nomination. She alleges that, while both were in high school, Kavanaugh held her down, put his hand over her mouth to silence her, and tried to remove her clothes.

The former treasurer said she was exposed to sexual abuse at age five and kept silent about her assault for almost 20 years.

Blasey Ford said the attack occurred at a party in the early 1980s and that a friend of Kavanaugh, Mark Judge, was also present.

"The truth is I've never sexually assaulted anyone, in high school or otherwise", Kavanaugh said in an interview on Fox News Channel's "The Story with Martha MacCallum", to air on Monday evening.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell angrily accused Democrats of slinging "all the mud they could manufacture" and promised a full Senate vote soon, but specified no date.

The Kavanaugh confirmation fight comes just weeks before November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are trying to take control of Congress from Republicans, against a backdrop of the #MeToo movement fighting sexual harassment and assault.

All the Republican senators questioning Prof Ford will be men. And she said she was totally inebriated, and she was all messed up, and she doesn't know it was him, but it might have been him.

Blasey Ford, who was a student at a private girls school, said she managed to escape and did not report the assault at the time.

While the White House is still supporting the nominee, many young people are not.

"We aren't colluding with anyone about anything, including the Kavanaugh nomination", said Martin Baron, The Post's executive editor. Everyone deserves better than this - everyone - not just Judge Kavanaugh, everyone.

"But the American people also insist that vague, unsubstantiated and uncorroborated allegations of 30-plus-year-old misconduct, where all of the supposed witnesses either totally deny it or can't confirm it, is nowhere near grounds to nullify someone's career or destroy their good name".

"There's a chance that this could be one of the single most unfair, unjust things to happen to a candidate, but I am with Judge Kavanaugh", Trump said.
