Apple acquires Shazam, mobile app to go ad-free for everyone

Apple acquires Shazam, offering more ways to discover and enjoy music

Apple agreed to acquire Shazam for $400m at the end of previous year and the deal was approved by European Union regulators earlier this month.

Back in December 2017, Apple acknowledged reports it had acquired music-recognition app Shazam, and today the company made it official, announcing the acquisition in a press release.

"Apple and Shazam have a long history together". In the early days of the service, customers had to call into a hotline to have music identified but that changed with the arrival of the Shazam app on Apple's App Store in July 2008 (it came to Android a few months later).

Apple's Monday announcement of the deal closing said that the "app will soon offer its experience ad-free for all users". Shazam has also been used in conjunction with TV advertisements in the past, and while Apple didn't mention this, it is possible that we could see Apple tie in Shazam content into its upcoming original content venture. The Apple Music division will be the primary house for further development of its assets - including the algorithms it uses as well as data on suggestions they make for users for new music.

Shazam's smartphone app is already tightly integrated with Apple's Siri digital assistant. Later on, Apple promises more great ways to discover and enjoy music.

Users of Apple's iPhone with the Shazam app installed can say: 'Hey Siri, what's that song?' and the app will identify it.
