Armed group attack military parade in Iran's Ahvaz

8 killed 20 injured as gunmen open fire on military parade in Iran

Gunmen have opened fire during an Iranian military parade in the south-western city of Ahvaz, killing several people, including civilians, and injuring at least 20, state media say.

"Shooting began by several gunmen from behind the stand during the parade". "After several people were injured, they realized it is a terrorist attack", it said.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.

The semi-official ISNA news agency published photographs of the attack's aftermath, with bloodied troops in dress uniforms helping each other walk away.

State television showed images of the immediate aftermath, with paramedics seen helping someone in military fatigues lying on the ground. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack in the city of Ahvaz.

Iran's Tasnim news agency, citing a local official, reported that at least 10 people had been killed, including a journalist.

The report called the attackers "Takifiri gunmen", a description that has previously been used for members of the "Islamic State" (IS) group. The attack struck on Ahvaz's Quds, or Jerusalem, Boulevard. However, Iran faced a bloody assault a year ago from the Islamic State group and Arab separatists in the region have attacked oil pipelines there in the past.

Iran also suffered major attacks by IS extremists on June 7, 2017, when militants assaulted the parliament and the shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the capital, Tehran.
