At least 12 dead as typhoon lashes Philippines

Super Typhoon Mangkhut threatens China

Presidential adviser Francis Tolentino says the dead included an infant and another child who were among four people killed in a landslide in Nueva Vizcaya, one of several provinces battered by the typhoon on Saturday.

Evacuations are voluntary, Salamat said, but added:"It is a highly encouraged evacuation".

The dead were six people killed in landslides, a girl who drowned and a security guard crushed by a falling wall.

Officers in the city of Baguio recovered the women's bodies from the soil and rubble after a hillside collapsed from the typhoon's heavy rains, said police Superintendent Pilita Tacio.

Wong said officials hoped to send elderly people living alone in Tai O to shelters on Saturday afternoon while buses would also be arranged to help residents in parts of Tuen Mun and Yuen Long to move away.

Storm warnings remained hoisted in 10 northern provinces, including Cagayan, which could still be lashed by devastating winds, forecasters said.

Typhoon Mangkhut has slammed into the northern Philippines, unleashing ferocious winds and blinding rain in a region where authorities have been rushing to evacuate tens of thousands of people from high-risk areas. "We are preparing our emergency assets and relief items".

The New York Times reports Duterte has put the military on high alert, and barred troops from taking leave.

What is the storm's path?

Crop damage in a worst-case scenario could reach about 157,000 tonnes of paddy rice and about 257,000 tonnes of corn, worth 13.5 billion pesos (€214 million), the agriculture ministry said. Winds and rain are preventing government agencies from assessing the full extent of damage, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said in a televised conference.

No casualties have been reported, Roque said.

Waves from Mangkhut, named for the Thai word for the mangosteen fruit, swept a woman out to sea in Taiwan on Friday.

Cathay Pacific Airways and Cathay Dragon announced today that flights from Taipei, Taichung and, Kaohsiung to Hong Kong will be canceled on September 16.

Airlines in Hong Kong have canceled hundreds of flights due to the storm, which is expected to come within 200 km (125 miles) of the city on Sunday and wreak havoc on the Asia financial center and nearby Pearl River Delta.

Residents collect coconuts which fell due to strong from Typhoon Mangkhut as it barreled across Tuguegarao city, Cagayan province, northeastern Philippines, Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018.

Officials in Hong Kong held emergency meetings Wednesday in which all departments were warned to have "their deployment and emergency response plans ready for the possible threats".

After passing the Philippines the island of Taiwan could receive strong storm force winds and heavy rains, following which it will be Hong Kong and mainland China that is on watch for future impacts.

Known locally as Ompong, Typhoon Mangkhut at one point hit gusts of 305 kph before it left the Philippines and moved across the South China Sea with reduced wind speeds. Strong winds cut communication lines in the northern province of Cagayan, causing the local government to lose contact with far-flung areas where the typhoon made landfall, Governor Manuel Mamba told CNN.

It is reasonable to expect future changes to flight schedules as Mangkhut travels towards China, and it is advised to review your travel arrangements in advance.
