Australian newspaper defiantly reprints cartoon of Serena Williams

According to Australian newspaper The Herald Sun and its cartoonist, Mark Knight, a cartoon of Serena Williams that echoes the harmful caricatures of black men and women once drawn in a shameful part of U.S. history isn't racist.

"If the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very boring indeed", the Herald Sun wrote on its front page.

He questioned the imposition by social media critics of no-go areas in cartooning and other critical media.

Knight said he had received death threats against his family since it was published, forcing him to suspend his Twitter account.

Later this week, it was no longer only Williams and Ramos being criticized for their conduct, but also an Australian cartoonist for his depiction of the incident. "The world has just gone insane", he added.

An Australian newspaper defended its cartoonist on Tuesday after publishing a caricature of Serena Williams having a temper tantrum at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, which civil rights leaders, celebrities and fans condemned as racist.

"A champion tennis player had a mega tantrum on the world stage, and Mark's cartoon depicted that", the editor said.

"And I also really like Venus [Williams], I'm really grateful I had the chance to play her". And the judge at the heart of the controversy, chair umpire Carlos Ramos, has said only that he is "fine" and is in a "delicate position". "Some of them very, very amusing". She later was fined $17,000 ($10,000 for verbal abuse, $4,000 for the coaching violation and $3,000 for racket abuse).

One of the most controversial Grand Slam finals of all time divided tennis and triggered a debate about sexism in the sport, fuelled by Williams's assertion that Ramos would not have dealt with a male player in the same way. In Knight's cartoon, Williams was seen jumping up and down having spat out a dummy as the umpire asks Haitian-Japanese tournament victor Naomi Osaka "can't you just let her win?".

Osaka was seen crying during the ceremony, and Williams appeared to lean over and say something in her ear, presumably to console her.

Rowling led widespread criticism of its Monday cartoon, saying it had reduced "one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes".
