California Aims to Phase out Fossil Fuels by 2045

California's governor and host Jerry Brown, whose crusade for clean energy started in the 1970s, set the tone by approving landmark legislation Monday that commits his state to purging Carbon dioxide from its electricity grid by 2045.

"This bill and the executive order put California on a path to meet the goals of Paris and beyond", Brown said at a signing ceremony in state capital Sacramento. Governor Jerry Brown signed the historic piece of legislation today.

EZRA DAVID ROMERO, BYLINE: The law requires the state to gradually collect all its electricity from clean sources like hydropower, solar and wind. Jerry Brown on Monday signed two measures created to push the state to 100 percent renewable electricity and so-called carbon neutrality by 2045. It will not be immediate.

"It will not be easy", Brown tweeted after signing Senate Bill 100 and a related executive order.

The signing came in the same week that San Francisco will host a Global Climate Action Summit on September 12-15. Trump withdrew from the accord previous year over concerns that it would hurt the US economy, making the United States the only country to do so.

Environmentalists cheered the news Monday.

California is not the first government to promise that homes and businesses would be able to get all their electricity from sources that do not pollute the air and warm the atmosphere. This is a series of actions that are leading California in the right direction.

Supporters of the measure included most of the state's leading environmental groups and renewable energy trade associations, along with the American Lung Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the League of Women Voters and business groups, including the Silicon Valley Leadership Council, Adobe, Nike, Gap Inc., and Levi Strauss. The state's biggest utilities, however, opposed the measure.

Critics said they were concerned that the bill would bring higher electricity prices.

"Climate change is here, he said".

The political reality slowing the transition to a global economy powered by clean energy rather than fossil fuels resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC and has dismissed climate change a hoax. The legislation passed the California Senate on May 31 by a vote of 25 to 13. In the week of the final vote, former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote a letter of support.

Here's what we know about this new era for California.

Californians overall seem to favor the law.

The law, known as SB 100, also sets goals of 50 percent clean energy by 2025 and 60 percent by 2030.

The law is the culmination of a movement that began 16 years ago, when former Gov. ESNA connects utilities, developers, energy users, policy makers and other key stakeholders from around the world to advance understanding and deployment of energy storage, and ultimately build a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient grid.

California utilities already get about a third of their energy from renewables, according to the California Energy Commission.

"It's impossible to overstate how significant it is for a state as large and influential as California to commit to 100 percent clean energy", Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune said Monday in a statement.

Renewable energy experts have looked to batteries that can store solar energy generated in the afternoon as one solution, but the technology is not ready for wide-scale deployment. Another 9 percent comes from nuclear plants.
