A Twitter user captured the moment a reporter for the Weather Channel appeared to fake the severity of the winds caused by Hurricane Florence on Friday as the hurricane made landfall in North Carolina.

By Friday evening, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm, its winds weakened to 112 km/h as it moved forward at 6km/h about 25 kilometres north of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

By Friday night the center of the storm had moved to eastern SC, about 15 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

As of 5 a.m. ET, top sustained winds had dropped to near 80 km/h with higher gusts, and Florence is expected to become a tropical depression later Saturday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

At one point, the 350-mile-wide but slow-moving storm packed winds so fierce that "CBS Evening News" anchor Jeff Glor almost lost contact with CBS News' New York studio during the morning broadcast.

Four looters have already been arrested in Brunswick County, North Carolina as Tropical Storm Florence wreaks havoc on the coast.

This story will be updated with additional information momentarily.

"The cost to SC, if that happens, if the storm continues the way it is going, could be in the billions", Dahler said.

One of the towns worst affected is New Bern, which sits between the Neuse and Trent rivers in North Carolina. Dozens more were rescued from a collapsed motel.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 68 trillion litres of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland. "We didn't know where to go", she said. The governor's office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain. Officials in the town of 30,000, which dates to the early 18th century, said over 100 people were rescued from floods and the downtown was under water by Friday afternoon.

A mother and baby were killed when a tree fell on a house, according to a tweet from Wilmington police.

Florence drove almost 1 million people from their homes and almost 700,000 lost power.

The Cape Fear River has overrun its banks, allowing water to pour into the downtown area of Wilmington. Its surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet (3.4 meters) of ocean water, and days of downpours could unload more than 3 feet (0.9 meters) of rain, touching off severe flooding.

The mayor said the pier made it through the storm on Thursday but did not survive the rough surf on Friday. Rescue crews have used boats to reach hundreds of people trapped by the rising waters.
