Cleveland Browns to release Josh Gordon Monday

Browns to release WR Josh Gordon

Gordon, who has a long history of substance abuse and suspensions, missed three weeks of training camp this summer to undergo counseling and treatment, and recently said he was in a good place mentally and physically.

After not listing him on the injury report all week, the Browns announced Saturday afternoon that Gordon would be out for Sunday's game against the Saints due to a hamstring issue and would not be on the trip.

Josh Gordon's time with the Cleveland Browns is over.

"This afternoon we informed Josh Gordon and his representatives that we are going to release him on Monday", Browns general manager John Dorsey said.

News of the Browns' intent to part ways with Gordon came out Saturday evening when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the team's intent to release Gordon on Monday.

"Unfortunately, we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward". There are no reports as of yet that the release was tied to any past issues. As many as five teams are researching possibly trading for him, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per sources informed.

Josh Gordon will soon be a free agent. They activated him, albeit on the non-football-injury list. Even with Gordon's multiple suspensions and missed time rendering him a third-year veteran, he has accrued enough National Football League service to be a free agent then. My understanding is it's an overall trust issue for a player on thin ice.

Gordon caught the game-tying touchdown for the Browns in last week's game against the Steelers. Dorsey and the new regime are trying to set a high standard for players to live up to in hopes they can turn the win-less franchise around.
