Cosby gets to 3 to 10 years for 2004 sex assault

Bill Cosby deemed a sexually violent predator, judge rules

Disgraced US television icon Bill Cosby was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison by a judge on Tuesday and branded a "sexually violent predator" for assaulting a woman at his Philadelphia mansion 14 years ago.

A spokeswoman for the Montgomery County district attorney's office says Cosby will be held at the county jail for at least the next few days.

Also in court Tuesday, prosecutors released Andrea Constand's full victim impact statement in which she details the harrowing experience of being sexually assaulted by Cosby, and the aftermath.

A judge made the ruling Tuesday - ahead of sentencing the 81-year-old, who has been convicted of drugging and molesting a woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.

The judge said it's "time for justice" as he sentenced Cosby to state prison and fined him $25,000.

Cosby became the first black actor to star in a prime-time TV show, I Spy, in 1965.

Prosecutors are asking for five to 10 years in prison.

His defense team argued that he'd endure "excessive hardship" in prison if he served 30 years, due to his age.

Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven O'Neill said he must first rule on whether to designate Cosby a "sexually violent predator" under state law, and arguments continued on Tuesday morning. His name will appear on a sex-offender registry sent to neighbours, schools and victims. That's certainly the message his lawyers struggled to convey for weeks in an effort to convince the court to tag Cosby with house arrest - a sentence that's not so bad when you've done well for yourself.

A defense psychologist says the chances that Bill Cosby will commit another sex offense are "extraordinarily low" because he's old, legally blind and needs help getting around.

"When the sexual assault happened, I was a young woman brimming with confidence and looking forward to a future bright with possibilities", she wrote in her five-page statement.

Cosby, 81, cemented his family-friendly reputation playing the mischievous but lovable Dr. Cliff Huxtable in the 1980s sitcom "The Cosby Show".

Cosby's first trial in 2017 ended in a mistrial when jurors could not reach a verdict.

Cosby arrived at the courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, walking with a cane and holding the arm of his spokesman Andrew Wyatt.

"I have often asked myself why the burden of being the sole witness in two criminal trials had to fall to me".

The former head of women's basketball operations at Cosby's alma mater Temple University, Constand said she considered Cosby a mentor and father figure the night he offered her three unidentified blue pills he referred to as "your friends" during a meeting to discuss her career.
