Coutinho aware Barcelona pushing to wrap up De Jong move

Frenkie de Jong

Spurs are also reportedly in the market for another midfielder and TeamTalk are citing the report from the Telegraph as saying that Pochettino is also planning to test Ajax's resolve with an improved bid for de Jong.

Ajax director of football affairs Marc Overmars has stated that Frenkie de Jong will not be departing Amsterdam in January. The Catalans can't afford to let him slip out of their grasp due to him being the ideal heir for Sergio Busquets, and even more importantly they can't afford to let Real sign him because they already have one of the strongest midfield in world football.

It follows on from a report by Mundo Deportivo which suggests that the Catalan giants failed with a possible offer of up to €30m to prise him away last month, with Tottenham also heavily linked. De Jong can play as an interior midfielder or deeper and his versatility is valued by Barcelona.

"Barcelona may return for Frenkie in January".

Frenkie De Jong is only 21 years old and still has time before a big move becknows him.

De Jong made his global debut for Netherlands on Thursday in a friendly against Peru and then went on to feature in the UEFA Nations League encounter against France at the weekend. So, Overmars has made it clear that De Jong will not be allowed to join Barcelona in the middle of the season.

De Jong's stock has continued to rise in the Netherlands, and he has won two caps for his country, and is closing in on a half-century of appearances for the capital club.

He added: "He is doing very well now, but we have often had Dutch players who first played very well, but later became less".
