Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein quits before Trump can fire him

Rod Rosenstein

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is heading to the White House expecting to be fired, sources tell Fox News, in the wake of a report that he suggested wearing a wire against President Trump and invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office a year ago.

One of Rosenstein's first major acts as deputy attorney general was also one of his most controversial.

The outlet reported that he did so "anticipation of being fired by President (Donald) Trump".

On Monday morning, White House officials said Rosenstein had offered to resign to quell the controversy, while Justice Department officials said he had no intention of resigning but was heading to the White House with the expectation he would be fired.

As of early Monday afternoon, it was still unclear whether Rosenstein would be fired, resign or remain in his position.

As Trump mulled Rosenstein's fate and consulted on how to respond, Rosenstein was summoned to the West Wing on Friday evening by White House chief of staff John Kelly.

Cummings has complained previously that Republicans controlling the oversight committee are not aggressively fulfilling their duty to investigate the Trump administration when warranted. Some urged him to fire Rosenstein.

The New York Times report said Rosenstein had discussed wearing a "wire" to tape Trump and pursuing his removal from office in meetings and conversations with Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials.

For more than a year, Trump's public and private comments about the Russian Federation probe have led to speculation and concern that Rosenstein could be fired.

Update 2: Solicitor General Noel Francisco will now oversee the Mueller investigation, according to rules cited by Vox.

Others suggested restraint while seeing if the report was incorrect or if it was planted by some adversary. He received mixed messages.

She warned that if Trump fires Rosenstein, it would give more ammunition to those who allege that he has been obstructing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, which Rosenstein is overseeing.

The next day at the hearing, Rosenstein tried to keep Democrats happy by defending Mueller, saying it would have been "difficult to find anyone more qualified" for the role of special counsel. "I sacrificed personally and professionally to help put the investigation on a proper course and subsequently made every effort to protect it".
