Dolphins swimming in flood water caused by Hurricane Florence

Its surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet (3.4 meters) of ocean water, and days of downpours could unload more than 3 feet (0.9 meters) of rain, touching off severe flooding.

A fallen tree is shown after it crashed through the home where a woman and her baby were killed in Wilmington, North Carolina, after Hurricane Florence made landfall on September 14, 2018. The Little River, the Cape Fear, the Lumber, the Neuse, the Waccamaw and the Pee Dee were all projected to overrun their banks, possibly flooding cities and towns. As of Saturday, about 676,000 homes and businesses were without power in North Carolina, along with 119,000 in SC.

It has trapped people in flooded homes as citizen swift-water rescue teams from out of state join local emergency professionals around the clock to try and bring them to safety. As the storm sat along the edge of the Atlantic, some stretches along the coastal Carolinas received close to 20 inches of rain.

In neighboring SC, 155,000 customers are without power, officials said.

He said five deaths were confirmed from the storm and "several others are under investigation".

Hurricane Florence is tearing through the Carolinas with disastrous flooding and record-setting rainfall.

US President Donald Trump has declared a disaster in the state of North Carolina, where a tropical storm has killed at least five people amid warnings the worst is far from over. The child's father was taken to a hospital.

Gusts reached over 100 miles per hour - the highest recorded in North Carolina since 1958. The crews tried to move the debris with a front loader, but a tree went through the windshield, causing further delays, the officials said.

Parts of southern North Carolina and northeastern SC could see another foot or more of rain over the weekend, according to National Weather Service. They later clarified those deaths were not related to Florence.

"Amazing. They did awesome", said Knox, who was stranded with seven others, including a boy carried out in a life vest. Fast moving waters proved otherwise. The winds howled, and the family escaped to an upper floor bedroom. Her 6-foot-2 husband went to see what he could do, but the water was above his chest, she said. "I think we're OK".

"I feel like the dumbest human being who ever walked the face of the earth", he said. Many of them are boat owners, who help rescue stricken flood victims.

Forecasters say the center of the eye of Florence has made landfall near Wrightsville, North Carolina.

Water was rising Saturday morning in a flood plain near the Waccamaw River, lapping up against homes and pooling over at least one main road.

It's not just rain in the local area that will torment Conway, forecasters warn.

The surges will be most harmful in North Carolina, with rain and flooding also making the dangerously high water levels even worse.

Volunteers and city workers filled sandbags this morning. "This rainfall will continue to produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding", the advisory said. "And then we will shift into putting our communities back together". With Florence, it'll be the same amount of rainfall in three days.

Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 18 trillion gallons (68 trillion liters) of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland.

Florence was one of two major storms threatening millions of people on opposite sides of the world.

The National Hurricane Center has revealed its latest projections for Tropical Storm Florence.

The hurricane center said the storm will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a right hook to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week. Operation BBQ Relief will be serving hungry people this weekend.
