FEMA to test 'Presidential Alert' system next week

The alert will look like a text

The test message on Thursday is scheduled for 2:18 p.m. EDT and will read: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System".

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is testing a new "presidential alert" system nationwide for the first time next week that will make it possible for Donald Trump to directly message almost everyone in the nation who has a cell phone. "In other words, it's basically like an amber alert from the president when we're all about to die".

After the alert, The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management wants Alaskans to weigh in on how they thought the test went, by completing a survey that will be found on the state's website.

An alert system could allow President Donald Trump to communicate with most Americans directly through their phones. "No action is needed".

"During this time, WEA compatible cell phones that are switched on, within range of an active cell tower, and whose wireless provider participates in WEA should be capable of receiving the test message", FEMA said.

Officials insisted that the system can not be used for political purposes.

The test is supposed to take place at 2:18 p.m. EDT on September 20.

"The EAS is a national public warning system that provides the President with the communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency", the statement continued.

The EAS is also used with radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers, the agency said. It is the system's first nationwide test in which users can not opt out.

University of California Los Angeles communications professor Tim Groeling told the network that broadcast-based emergency alerts "have remained professional and impartial over decades".

The goal of the new alert option, according to FEMA, is to add a new way for the government to reach people in major disasters and other emergencies - something the existing emergency alert system already does on other formats such as radio and television.

It is also meant to be used in a national emergency, only by the president.
