Flights between Britain & EU could be halted after Brexit

The affair is especially ill-timed as Britain's proposal for future trade ties with Europe after Brexit centres on an offer that London handle customs checks on behalf of the European Union after the split.

Starmer said May was on course to fail these tests.

Britain's Brexit proposal was flatly dismissed as "unworkable" by EU Council President Donald Tusk, to the frustration of British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"It is right that Parliament has the first say but if we need to break the impasse, our options must include campaigning for a public vote and nobody is ruling out Remain as an option".

Brexit minister Robin Walker accused Labour of trying to take the United Kingdom "back to square one" and of wanting to re-run the referendum, saying: "Labour promised to respect the referendum result, but are just playing political games and trying to frustrate it".

"It's decision time and we need to nail our colours to the mast", Emily Wallace, chair of the Vauxhall Labour party, told AFP on the side-lines of the party conference in Liverpool.

"That does not sound like a solution to anything".

Chief executive of the Food and Drink Federation Ian Wright said the technical notices laid bare the grisly prospect of a no-deal Brexit, including chaos at the ports, serious disruption to food supplies and more administrative burdens on the food and drink industry.

"This is a betrayal of the very highest order".

Media captionWould Jeremy Corbyn vote Leave or Remain now?

"There was no intention, nor did the motion rule out the option of remain".

"We've carefully gone step by step, setting out our position and we're doing that again today".

The EU may well seek to negotiate continued preferential treatment in return for access to its single market, while other countries could also seek visa waivers in return for trade deals.

But Starmer was clear.

Luton-based carrier EasyJet created an Austrian division in July 2017 to allow it to fly between European Union countries after Brexit.

"This isn't about frustrating the process", he said. "It's about stopping a destructive Tory Brexit".
