Former Content Moderator Sues Facebook, Claiming the Job Gave Her PTSD

Scola's lawyer Steve Williams, of Joseph Saveri Law Firm, said in a statement that his client wants Facebook to set up a medical monitoring fund to provide testing and care to content moderators with PTSD. She is attempting to make it a class action case on behalf of other current and former employees who suffer due to Facebook's alleged "failure to provide a safe workplace for the thousands of contractors who are entrusted to provide the safest environment possible for Facebook users".

She worked at Facebook's offices in Menlo Park and Mountain View for nine months from June 2017, under a contract through Pro Unlimited, a Florida-based staffing company, which is also mentioned in the legal action.

It added: 'Instead, the multi-billion-dollar corporation affirmatively requires its content moderators to work under conditions known to cause and exacerbate psychological trauma, ' the suit alleges.

According to her lawyers, she developed post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of constant exposure to "highly toxic and extremely disturbing images" at her workplace.

Facebook, which now employs at least 7,500 content moderators, has put workplace safety standards into place to protect content moderators, including counseling and mental health support, changing the way traumatic images appear and training moderators to be able to recognize the symptoms of PTSD.

The class action lawsuit claims that Facebook and its contractor Pro Unlimited created risky work conditions for thousands of contractors by failing to provide adequate training and counselling in defiance of its own guidelines.

"That is why we take the support of our content moderators incredibly seriously, starting with their training, the benefits they receive, and ensuring that every person reviewing Facebook content is offered psychological support and wellness resources", the statement added.

Scola worked at Facebook's offices in Menlo Park and Mountain View, California, for nine months from June a year ago, under a contract through Pro Unlimited Inc, a Florida-based staffing company.

The legal action has been taken in California by former contract employee Selena Scola.

Scola claims that her PTSD could be triggered by entering cold buildings or touching a computer mouse.

Her symptoms are also triggered when she recalls or describes graphic imagery she was exposed to as a content moderator.
